Learn your foot patterns and the first few techniques! Then there will be a drill section where you can just drill the moves without having to review the technique explanation (although it is recommended to review it at least once a week when you first start!)

Drills and Conditioning for Week 1

Your first drills class! It's important to drill daily if you can, but at least 2 or 3 times a week is good, too. The dance conditioning class is for absolute beginners, so if you've never taken a dance conditioning class or fitness class, this is for you! We'll be working on strengthening the muscles needed to support the movements and postures needed for raqs sharqi.

Week 4

More drills!

Drilling helps us get the movements into our muscle memory. It's super important to drill so that when you perform, you don't have to think about it so much.

Do you remember what it was like first learning to drive? At how overwhelming it all was, and you couldn't go fast or very far because it was just too hard/exhausting/scary? But now that you've been driving, it's no problem at all? Same with dance. The first time you try it, it's hard, there's too many things to think about, and you get tired and frustrated easily. But the more you practice (drill) the easier it will become, until you'll be doing these moves as your warm up!

The finish line is in sight, you've made it this far!

These drills are going to get harder, as we will be building on what you have learned so far. New foot patterns, a more advanced discussion about posture, and even a combo.

I've never danced before, can I take this course?

Yes! This course was designed for absolute beginners, including students who have never taken any kind of dance class previously.

Is this course self-paced?

This course is the guided one, where you will receive an email when the next class is available for you. If you want a self-paced course, there is the Raqs sharqi - Beginner 1 - Self Paced course.

What do I wear, and what equipment will I need?

Wear whatever is comfortable for you to move in! Hip scarves can help you accentuate your hip movements but they aren't required. For some classes it may be beneficial to have a fitness mat available, but it's not required.
